why clementine?
Aug. 8th, 2013 11:25 pmFor most characters in the Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus series finding a play by for a character is really difficult for one simple reason: they're half-god. Meaning some of their physical features aren't "normal". In Hazel's case we have her gold eyes.
My choice play-by is a young Keke Palmer an example here, but she's missing the most striking feature of Hazel and I fail at coloring her eyes (maybe one day). But as it stands I prefer Clementine for a variety of reasons.
Despite the fact she's a video game character and three years younger, there's several contributing factors:
1.) Hazel is listed as looking no older than thirteen. A lot of people choose someone that makes Hazel looking around sixteen. Riordan mentions she looks that age for a reason. And, thankfully, in some pictures of Clementine we can sort of pass her off at around 11. That's what I intend for.
2.) Clementine and Hazel share similar backgrounds. One died at 13 and spent forever in hell. One lost their family in 8 and then lived through the zombie apocalypse. While Clementine is from present day, their backgrounds and behaviors are similar. They both are girls who have a strong sense of right and wrong, don't want to leave others behind, understand death and risks, are kind-hearted, courageous, and an affinity to art. So Clementine holds herself a lot in the same way as Hazel. Which means I feel icons will be more in-tune with Hazel's behavior.
3.) They look alike. this is Clem and this is the official art for Hazel. Hazel looks like a slightly older version of Clem. This is my final and most striking point. Because Clem even has gold eyes. The only real issue here is that in some shots she looks whiter than she appears, but then again Hazel's dad is Pluto/Hades so it can work.
Also, obviously, age. But I would prefer having her look a little younger than she should be in icons than not grasp what the character is about and/or have the most striking features. This means I'm going to ask that people pretend that the icons are of a 13-year-old Clem or something similar, but I haven't made this choice lightly and believe that until I find someone I prefer more it's a good one.
